Titans caught out by Banfield

Tony Banfield’s 3 interceptions in the first quarter were the highlight of a dominant Houston display as the Oilers brushed aside a shell shocked New York with consummate ease. Titan’s QB Johnny Green may have thought Banfield had a magnetic football device in his gloves as 3 of his first 4 passes were picked off by the lurking corner back, the second resulting in a pick six TD for Banfield. Green threw a total of 5 interceptions in the game as the Oilers defense went to work on the hapless QB. When Charley Tolar ran in the 4th TD of the quarter to give Houston a 28-0 the game was effectively over. Houston coach Pop Ivy was afforded the luxury of benching a few starters from the 2nd quarter which may have saved the Titans blushes from a potential record breaking drubbing as the Oilers lost some continuity amongst their inexperienced backups. George Blanda had a career high 45 attempts with the shackles off and even threw 3 interceptions with little detrimental effect as the lead was never put under any serious pressure.

This was Houston’s fifth straight win, putting them squarely in charge of the Eastern Division with a 3 win cushion over their nearest rivals. They next play the Western Division leaders Denver, who alongside Houston and Dallas are the class acts of the first half of the season.
