DEATH5 – Classic Series ballistic armed Dalek Drone

First (only) appearance 1974, Season 11, Story UUU ”Death to the Daleks”.

So no doubt you are wondering how on Earth this one goes in above no.6’s Renegade Black Dalek Supreme right? And with some justification. The scheme does appear a bit flat and it was a definite inferior departure compared to the ones in the 1973 all time classic Planet of the Daleks. Let me explain, first up their appearance was a much welcomed one as the story followed the slightly dud Invasion of the Dinosaurs.  This one was right back on form with the Doctor and Sarah-Jane Smith marooned on a planet with a very frightening degenerate indigenous race of Exxilons intent on killing them. Then we had a malignant living city that used its own foundations with effect to attack as well as the very creepy Exxilon zombies. There were also very good set piece battle scenes and this story also had incidental music from Carey Blyton as oppose Dick Mills and perhaps the only time he ever matched the maestro. That said I am aware that not everyone liked it. imagesCADZGG79When the Daleks finally appear at the end of the 1st episode things get altogether more interesting. Firstly the Daleks find that their death ray blaster gun sticks don’t work and they reluctantly join forces with the Doctor and for a while are effectively the good guys.  You can’t keep a Dalek down however so we all know that they are secretly planning to double cross him at the first opportunity.

So onto the real reason why they’re high on this list.  Finding their blasters are kaput they develop a ballistic machine gun variant using model tardi (plural for tardis anyone?) as target practice.

I loved it at the time and still do now.  In fact in this story my allegiance was irrevocably swayed to wanting the Daleks to actually win and I stuck with that through future adventures. I was incredulous when they got a royal thrashing by the zombies at the end and not a happy bunny at all. So a worthy no.5
